Perotin Is Hailed As A Kind Of Mozart Of His Time

Pà ©rotin is hailed as a sort of Mozart of his time. He was a scholarly musician and musical innovator . Pà ©rotin is called by many different names: Perotinus – his Latin Name and Perotinus Magnus – Pà ©rotin the Great ; and even â€Å"optimus discantor†, or great composer of discant. According to Hussman, Pà ©rotin was a court composer for Notre Dame, but his connection to Notre Dame is not entirely confirmed. It is because of an account by the English traveler Anonymous IV and letters to a Bishop that it is accepted that Pà ©rotin was associated with Notre Dame. Whether he wrote specifically for Notre Dame or not, Pà ©rotin wrote magnificent music that has been preserved for several centuries to this day . The life of Pà ©rotin is uncertain and full of speculation. Different scholars have very diverse ideas of Pà ©rotin’s life. Tischler believed that Pà ©rotin was born sometime between 1155 and 1160. He also stated that he was a pupil of Leonin, the composer of the Magnus liber. Pà ©rotin is believed to have to have been a better organum composer the Leonin himself and even revised the Magnus liber at the end of the 12th century between 1180 and 1190 . In revising the Magnus liber, Pà ©rotin composed and inserted his own clausula and puncta, such as Alleluya Nativitas into the Magnus liber. The works of Pà ©rotin are known to be beautiful and thoughtfully voiced with colorful textural harmonies. Sometime after revising the Magnus liber, Pà ©rotin began composing three-voice organum. Later in his life,

Analysis of an Advertisement on Tsunamis and 9/11 Essay

Think to yourself, what would happen to you when the planet is gone? And when thinking about it, think about your family. Our planet is a vital living organism, and each individual needs to take into consideration that everything we do, doesn’t matter if you didn’t commit the deed, everything effects our planet and you. The ideology that World Wildlife Fund is trying convey is the importance of our planet, and without it we are nothing. What I Learned from the Mailman free essay sample

I had never really noticed the mailman before. Sure, we’d wave brightly at each other when we crossed paths, and when I was younger and expecting a birthday party invitation I’d sit eagerly on the porch, straining my ears for the telltale whoosh of the mail truck brakes. The mailman always had something with my name on it when I ran up to his window, when I was still young enough to consider every letter addressed to me a rare and beautiful treasure. Someone had been thinking of me, I’d always say to myself as I raced up my driveway with my letter clutched to my heart, someone had taken the time to form each character in a message just for me. But as for the courier of this deliciously anticipated note, I took little notice. Not until nearly a decade later, when a certain cream colored note found its way into our mailbox. We will write a custom essay sample on What I Learned from the Mailman or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page I had just come home from my summer job as a camp counselor, sticky from fourth grader fingers and exhausted from my forty-hour week. The aforementioned note sat quietly underneath the day’s mail, and I absentmindedly glanced over it as I sorted the endless stream of college mail out from the rest. Wait a moment. Retirement? I put down the college brochures and, with growing incredulity, read the single sheet of crisp marbled paper that spelled out my mailman’s plans for the end of his working years. He wished everyone a fond farewell, and hoped that he had served us well for the past forty years. As I sat there, a growing realization spread over me. My mailman has watched me grow up. He delivered everything from the What to Expect When You’re Expecting to the new parent counseling brochures, from the kindergarten welcome to the middle school code of conduct, from the high school open house schedule to the college mail that was now pouring in by the truckload . And in a few months he will deliver the letters that will decide my future for me, whether they contain news I want to hear or not. All these years he’s been the key link between the outside world and myself, and all these years I have taken his integral role for granted, never noticing his diligence until it wasn’t there anymore. Perhaps my place in this world isn’t about making myself stand out, about pursuing dreams that will leave me alone at the top. How many people carry out their daily tasks with a smiling face and a serving attitude, comfortable with their role in helping society run smoothly? Behind every public figure of history was not only a veritable battalion of family and advisers but also countless people without one of whom history would have run the course that it has. At every moment in the world there are people trying to make the world revolve around them, and for some of those people it may have to. But my mailman has taught me an idea t hat no amount of education could have led me to. Perhaps my role in society is not to fixate the world on an axis around myself. Perhaps it is my task to help the world revolve.

Write a magazine article Essay Example

Write a magazine article Essay With lower budgets, very basic special effects and black and white picture, Alfred Hitchcocks psycho still manages to grind out the suspense to compete with todays blockbuster hits. With some of the most memorable scenes in cinema history, it makes you wonder, will this unique psychological thriller ever die out? The film cost one million dollars to make, and amazingly made over fifteen times that value within just one year of its release and with one million pounds being so much back in 1960, Psycho was an outstanding hit and an incredible achievement for British director Alfred Hitchcock. There is no doubt that Hitchcocks directory used the such basic equipment and limited special effects to their full tension creating potential. Even today when we have the choice of many up to date pragmatic movies to choose from at the local film rental shop, Psycho still remains a popular choice on the shelf. It is also a favourite for media courses as it is packed with clever directory techniqu es, twists and memorable scenes to comment on. Psycho is a prime example that a classic never dies. Psychos uniqueness and popularity is mostly down to the number of genres it represents. This creates a vast target market of viewers to enjoy this visual masterpiece. The film opens with a sexual frisson where a couple appear to have secretly just had some kind of sexual action in the middle of the day. This was a first back in 1960 as the censorship rules far stricter on nudity. The main character Marion then is seen stealing $40,000 from her work place, from here on the whole sexual frisson comes to an end and a cops and robbers crime scene kicks off. It just so happens that the motel Marion chooses to stay at just happens to be owned by a psychopathic killer and therefore the horror movie genre over takes the cops and robbers genre. The murders that motel owner Norman Bates commits are found out In the style of a detective movie and has the classic Scooby Doo ending to it where the murderer happens to be the owner of the place. It is therefore difficult to put Psycho into one genr e but what you can say is, it has something for everyone in it which I believe is one of the secrets of its success. The plot of the story makes it gripping throughout. The plot is packed with twists, turns and excitement with the odd shock and surprise whilst there are always some red herrings in the story to mislead you. Hitchcock makes us assume things such as Normans mother. We are led to believe that she is a real person yet we never actually see her, only her silhouette in the window, until the end of course where there is that horrific image of her decaying body in the wheelchair. You will undoubtedly notice some interesting characters in the film as well to add a bit of interest to the story. Most noticeably and most memorably is Norman Bates who is a little different to your average person, mostly because he dresses up as his dead mother and brutally murders people, but his personality makes him appear to be anything but a psychopathic killer. As Marion first parks up at the motel and Norman appears from the gothic house on top of the hill, he seems just the type of guy you would want to meet yet ironically he is actually the opposite of this. Since the death of his mother who he actually murdered himself, he has two sides to him; the Norman side which is simply himself who is a generally nice guy and his dreaded mother side; where he is an uncontrollable threat. Whenever something that would have potentially upset his mother is said, the mother side of him takes over and Norman appears to be a completely different character such as when Marion makes the com ment about it being possibly easier for him if he sends his mother to a home and he becomes almost possessed by his mother side. Hitchcock signals this by a change in music and a close up of Normans forbidding eyes. Yet when he is out of mother mode he is helpful to Marion and despite being rather shy he likes to talk at every opportunity and talks honestly like about how little visitors he gets at his motel and as an audience we have sympathy for him because he seems to be a bit of a loser as they say. He does however appear quite intelligent with his use of metaphors about life such as his explanation of us all being in our own trap. As for the other main character Marion, she was the 1960s equivalent to a model, although this opinion has died down a bit, as her appearance is a bit unfashionable to todays standards. Comparing to todays standards, the special effects may not be as visually realistic but what makes it still compete in tension is the realism of the storyline and that this could happen to you. Today, the story lines from films often contain things like aliens invading the planet so us humans get rid of them by shooting them with laser beams, and admittedly the special effects make this look realistic but you never walk away feeling effected by it as things like this simply do not happen. However, Norman Bates was based on a true character and everything that happens in psycho, happens in real life, from murder to affairs. In fact, I remember going to a Hitchcock theatre on holiday and watching the shower scene from Psycho and secretly the reason I didnt have a shower in the hotel for two weeks was if Im being honest, because I was scared and not because I wanted a bath. This is why psycho lives long in the memory of those who dare to watch it. Hitchcock uses incredibly clever directory techniques to absorb the audience into another world. He uses symbolism and irony that the audience unconsciously take in such as the birds of prey in Normans office. Norman claims his mother is as harmless as one of those stuffed birds and as we discover, she has in fact been preserved by Norman using his stuffing experience and these birds in their time were not the kind of birds youd keep as pets. The memorable scenes which are some of the most famous in cinema history are just what makes it the difference between a good film and a great film, this is mostly down to the way Hitchcock directs the scene using music which can either create tension or shock such as the high screeching music and the clever camera angles which shock the audience in the shower scene. Obviously the quality of todays special effects have changed cinema for the better today but the illusions Hitchcock wanted to make back in 1960, could hardly be made much better even with todays technology. He was left with the bare bones of special effects and the basics of lighting and camera angles. In the shower scene again for an example, you never see the knife enter the body as the camera angle cuts just before and you are left to picture yourself what happens next with the help of the sound effect of a knife stabbing a melon. The music is a key part of what creates suspense and a general feeling of the current event. Near the beginning of the film when Marion is suspicious about the following policeman, the music creates the feeling of a chase taking place and the music when Norman changes character to his mother side, the music creates tension. The most famous scene of the film if not, any film is the shower scene. There is a long period of there being no dialogue in which we see Norman remove a picture off his office wall and peek through a hole at Marion who is getting undressed as she prepares to have a shower. This is the first signal visible to the audience that Norman may be some kind of threat to Marion and you question what he is about to do. He then disappears up to the house on top of the hill. Meanwhile we see a close up of Marions face as she turns on the shower. I always wondered myself whether the water would be unbearably cold if you turn it on without any time for it to heat up, but thats irrelevant. Before now, we are hinted that Marion has changed her mind after speaking to Norman and she is in fact going to go back and give back the money she stole. The camera angle cuts so we can see the water washing down from the above showerhead. Perhaps this is symbolising the water washing away Marions sins and show ing her starting again. The scene is rather calm until we see a shadow cast on the shower curtain and the camera takes its concentration off Marion and onto this shadow. Whilst the audience questions who or even what it is, the curtain is torn across and we see the dark figure of Norman Bates dressed as his mother with a knife raised above his head. Simultaneously the music creates a fast high pitch screech whilst Marion screams for help. Norman repeatedly slashes Marion and the camera angle quickly flashes between the dark shadowy figure of Norman and the bright image of Marion. She is cornered in a shower with nobody within saving distance of her, which adds to the tension. As Norman stabs her, the camera cuts to another part of her body, partly to let us imagine ourselves what would happen next but also to do with the censorship rules not allowing it and probably the special effects not being able to create such an illusion. The stabbing of the Melon creates a gruesome and I assume a realistic sound. After many slashes, Norman casually walks away whilst Marion grabs onto the shower curtain in a desperate last gasp attempt to save herself but her sheer weight is too much for the hooks to take and she falls back down. The camera then concentrates on all the blood going down the plughole to give a ghastly ending to the attack. The camera then cuts so it is focused right on Marions eye which despite her being dead, sti ll looks in shock, then the camera slowly spirals away from her to show the lasting image of her dead body on the floor. The shocking thing about it is the unexpectation of it. Norman seemed to like Marion and showed no signs and had no reason to harm her, but as we find out, it is the mother side of him which drove him to commit this murder. His mother would not have been happy with him having another woman other than her in his life so through sheer jealousy; the mother side of him forced him to murder her. I personally follow the opinion of most others in that psycho is a classic film and really do give credit to Alfred Hitchcock for using the bare basics of cinematic tools to create one of the greatest ever films. My opinion suggests that Hitchcocks directing was the difference between this version of Psycho and the newer version that was made and was what made it a success.

Diving Sport Essays - Caving Equipment, Sports Clothing,

Diving Sport "There you are, totally weightless, quietly soaring just above the sea floor with only the smallest amount of physical exertion. Small fish come out of their holes to look at you. How about that? You are the curiosity. You are the thing that does not belong. Perhaps this is why you dive. You are taking part in exploring man's last ecological frontier. The very thought would excite anyone whose blood still flows in his veins. The diver is the observer, he looks at everything he can. He totally forgets the outside world" (Reseck 4). When I first read this piece, I got goosebumps. For years man has explored this vast universe, spending millions of dollars, and only making a tiny scratch on its surface. For me, to be able to explore a world completely different from mine sounds like an opportunity of a lifetime. When I had to choose a topic for my senior project, scuba diving was the most compelling of all. This paper is about the development and use, the techniques, and the physiological concerns of scuba diving. Man underwater dates all the way back to the Iliad, but sports diving for fun and for a profession is fairly new. If one has ever been underwater, he should know that breathing is impossible. In the early 1940's, Jaques Yves-Cousteau, a Frenchman, developing something that is now a very important asset to scuba diving. It is known to us as a "regulator." The regulator conserved air by releasing only the amount of air the Korell 2 diver needed to breathe. This increased the time the diver could stay down on one tank of air to about one hour if he were in shallow depths. Cousteau's regulator was simple and inexpensive and marked the beginning of the sport of scuba diving. The sport grew somewhat slowly through the late 40's and early 50's because, although the diver could now stay underwater for an extended period of time, in most parts of the world the water was so cold that he was forced to leave the water after a short time (Reseck 16). In the early 1950's, rubber suits were designed. They were used to keep the diver warm. These old "dry suits" were worn over long underwear and sweat suits or sweaters. The clothing acted as an insulator, and the rubber suit was used to simply keep the insulation dry. But when the easily punctured "dry suits" were torn, the insulation became wet, thus causing the insulation to be ineffective. But a new suit, called the "wet suit" was invented. The wet suit actually strapped a thin layer of water next to the diver's body, which soon heated up to body temperature and acted as insulation. Nowadays, foam neoprene is used for all wet suits. When the demand for wet suits increased, manufacturers developed the standard small, medium, and large sizes. As the market continued to grow, the neoprene material was improved by making it softer and more flexible. A backing was also added on the neoprene to increase its durability and service. The market grew larger still, and ready made suits came in extra small, small, medium, medium large, large, and extra large sizes. Today, almost anyone can walk into a store and come out with a good suit that fits (Reseck 17). Korell 3 Scuba diving can be very dangerous and, if not approached safely, one must know the precautions and dangers before jumping into water to dive. There are several ways to dive underwater. One way is the Pike Surface dive. Start from a prone position on the surface. Sweep both arms back toward the hips at the same time and bend sharply at the hips so that the head and trunk point directly toward the bottom of the pool. With palms facing forward, bring the arms up forcibly, in line with the head, and lift both legs--straight and together--out of the water so that they, too, form a straight line with the body. Let the weight of the legs force the body to submerge. Do not kick until the feet are below the surface, then either kick for greater depth or straighten out for an underwater swim (Counsilman and Drinkwater 29). Another dive is the Feet First dive. Tread water over the spot where the dive is to be made. Raise the body out of the water with a strong kick and a downward push with the hands and arms. Then straighten legs, point toes, and raise the arms overhead.

Research Report on Ecotourism in Mauritius

Research Report on Ecotourism in Mauritius Introduction to Tourism in Mauritius Tourism is regarded as one of the most important foreign exchange earners in Mauritius. The IMF (2012) reports that tourism is slightly over 8 percent of the countrys GDP, making it an important aspect of the islands economy. The growth in the tourism sector over the past 3 decades has contributed to the overall growth of the Mauritian economy.Advertising We will write a custom research paper sample on Research Report on Ecotourism in Mauritius specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More The IMF (2012) reveals that tourism has served as a large engine of job creation in the country. The performance of Mauritiuss tourism sector has been impressive with the country experiencing a remarkable increase from having some 18,000 visitors a year in 1970 to some 400,000 visitors in 1994 and an impressive 960,000 visitors to the island in 2012. The tourism sector in Mauritius is largely homegrown. There are a number of major luxury hotel chains owned and operated by Mauritian entrepreneurs. In addition to this, the Mauritius business community has reinvested part of the proceeds from the sector into the Mauritius economy thereby fostering the countrys economy. Profile of Mauritian Tourists Mauritius is marketed as a high-class destination and targeted at up-market tourists. As an expensive tourist destination, the island is out of reach for the standard tourist. Bulcke and Verbeke (2009) reveal that the inflated airfares are an important factor in making the destination inaccessible. Graham and Forsyth (2012) observe that more than 90% of the total number of visitors to Mauritius go to the country for leisure purposes. The national carrier, Air Mauritius, enjoys almost a monopoly as the main passenger carrier to the island. A key attribute of the airline is that it charges high prices, which help to uphold the high-class destination image that the island has and continues to project. The limited c ompetition faced by Air Mauritius allows the airline to implement price discrimination based on nationality and the origin of the travel. This discrimination ensures that foreigners are charged significantly more than the Mauritius residents are. Since chartered flights are not allowed into the country, reaching Mauritius at a favourable rate proves to be impossible for many. European high-spenders make up the vast majority of Mauritius’ foreign tourists. The largest number of tourists to Mauritius is from France and the French island of Reunion located in the Indian Ocean. These two countries combined account for about 41% of the total number of foreign tourists visiting the country annually.Advertising Looking for research paper on communications media? The islan d was held as a French colony from 1905 to 1810 when it was lost to the British after the Napoleonic wars. There is therefore deep history between France and the island with many cultural and language similarities between the two countries (Graham Forsyth, 2012). The other principal tourist-generating countries include South Africa, United Kingdom, India, Germany, and Italy. Major Attractions The primary attraction offered by Mauritius is the pristine natural setting of the country. Geographically, the Island has an expansive white sandy beach that extends for more than 140 kilometres. In addition to the impressive sandy beaches surrounding the island, the country has beautiful coral reefs that protect many natural lagoons found within the surrounding waters. The turquoise sea surrounding Mauritius is a prime tourist attraction. The combination of the splendid beaches, good climate, and impressive sea life has led to Mauritius being presented as a tropical paradise for tourists. To ensure that all tourists are able to enjoy the countrys physical assets, all tourist hotels in Mauritius have been built on or near the wide beaches or the protected lagoons giving visitors an opportunity to savour the natural beauty of the island. As a small island, Mauritius is able to market itself as a more attractive and exotic destination for tourists. Scheyvens and Momsen (2008) contend that small islands like Mauritius are able to obtain a much higher than average international arrivals growth rate since tourists travelling to this destination can delight in the fact that their island is not shared with any other tourism operators. This exotic nature of Mauritius makes it a prime tourist destination for high-end tourists.Advertising We will write a custom research paper sample on Research Report on Ecotourism in Mauritius specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More Major Activities Mauritius has faced increasing competition in its prin cipal tourist-generating countries from other affordable destination. The island has therefore had to diversify its tourism products in order to maintain its clientele and even attract more. The increase in leisure opportunities to visitors was also prompted by the decline in average duration of stay by tourists in Mauritius. Graham and Forsyth (2012) explain that the government implemented a policy aimed at increasing the expenditure per day and rising the average duration of stay for each tourist. The island offers a wide range of water-related sports to its visitors. Common water sports include sea kayaking and kite surfing. Mauritius has a number of cultural and historical sites that tourists can visit. Port Louis offers the visitor an unreserved look into the colonial past of the island. There is a statue of the 17th century French naval officer Mahe de Labourdonnais and Queen Victoria (Mountain Proust, 2002). The two statues pay tribute to the two powers that colonized Maurit ius. The National History Museum has many artefacts that elaborate on the country’s history and its rich culture. In addition to this, the museum has a wide range of stuffed Mauritian birds offering the visitor a glimpse into the expansive bird population of the country. Shopping is another activity that tourists in Mauritius can engage in while visiting the country. The island has a number of high-end shops that offer luxury products from all over the world. There are also duty-free goods that tourists can purchase and duty applied to some luxury products has been reduced in order to promote purchasing by tourists. The island has a number of trendy bars and restaurants that appeal to the fun loving tourists. The island offers a host of nightlife activities including dancing and parties in its vibrant clubs (Mountain Proust, 2002). For further entertainment, the country has a number of world-class casinos that cater primarily for tourists. Recycling & Nature - Essay Example From this paper it is clear that  recycling helps us to conserve the natural resources for future generation. Most of the natural resources are non-renewable in nature. For example, fossil fuel is a non-renewable energy source. If we reduce our fossil fuel energy consumption, we can conserve some energy for future generation. Recycling will help us in reducing our energy consumption. This study highlights that one of the major villains which cause environmental problems is plastic materials. The influence of plastic materials in our daily life is growing day by day. However, the major drawback of plastic materials is the fact that these materials will never undergo biodegradation. In other words, most of the plastic materials have the ability to resist the natural degradation process. Under such circumstances, it is unwise to produce more and more plastic materials. However, we can limit the plastic production with the help of recycling of the existing or used up plastic materials.à ‚  The importance of recycling is not only beneficial for the earth but also for businesses as they secure better relations with the consumers over the matter of saving the environment. In most of the industrial units, recycling process is undertaken not only as a method to increase profit, but also as an option to demonstrate corporate social responsibility. Big companies are the biggest producers of industrial waste and they have the moral and legal responsibility to recycle it without causing many damages to the living things.

Insurgent Movements During and Immediately After WW2 Essay

Insurgent Movements During and Immediately After WW2 - Essay Example The further occupation of France, as well as austerity measures of Nazis and Vichy regime increased the will to fight. Part of the population had no choice apart from joining the Resistance (Jews or people forced to work in Germany) (Crowdy, 2007). Part of Resistance groups were communist and antifascists. Another part of the Resistance fought for the liberation of France and establishing the new country. It should be also mentioned that significant part of Frenchmen was depressed by the defeat in 1940, did not want to fight or preferred to accept the existing situation. So-called passive resistance also existed (Folker, 2012). The Resistance was a movement of people with different principles and motivations. The Resistance included various forms of struggle. It may be described as a combination of movements and networks (Folker, 2012). Movements were mostly aimed on the fight against the Nazism ideology. They grouped around newspapers and spread the ideas of the Resistance. The production of the publications was another form of resistance. Networks were structures that are more active. They gathered information about military activity, organized sabotage actions and armed resistance. Sabotage and espionage were the main forms of fight. The armed fight was the less frequent form of resistance. Non-obedience to the Nazis legislation or hiding Jews are also treated as a form of fight. Part of people treat themselves as resistants for ‘at least doing something’. About 500,000 people were involved in the Resistance and about 100,000 people participating in this movement were killed. The results of maquis’ military was not so serious (about 9,000 executions). The most impo rtant result of the Resistance activities was the information gathered before the Normandy invasion (Cobb, 2009). The activity of the Resistance media was one of the

Oil and gas industry Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words

Oil and gas industry - Essay Example The environment is a crucial component for the survival of living organisms. To that effect, the paper will discuss the impact of the oil and gas industry on the environment. First, the operations in the oil and gas sector lead to water pollution by means of oil spills and by products. Spills can occur both on land and sea. As noted by Taylor (295), there has been evidence of oil spills on the American coastline and adjacent countries. Oil spills in the marine environment kills the aquatic ecosystem. Scholastic and Crane (6) claim that the Deepwater Horizon Spill at the Gulf of Mexico was the worst in U.S History where more than 250,000 barrels of oil spilled into the ocean. It affected a huge population of the marine life. The same applies for land spills. The oil damages the surface vegetation. Spills may take up from months to years to clean up. Second, the petroleum industry is the largest industrial source of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in the United States. As cited by Barker (45), these are groups of chemicals that form the ground level ozone. This results in global warming as the ozone reflects the heat from the earth’s warming up the earth because the VOCs lead to the formation of zone. Ozone traps heat in the atmosphere leading to global warming. Third, crude oil contains a mixture of numerous organic compounds that are extremely toxic and cause cancer. The presence of benzene in crude oil results in leukemia in humans. In the same way, the concentration of oil at 4000 parts per million promptly kills the fish (Prasad and Kumari 29). Next, the oil and gas industry pollute the air. The burning of the oil products produces greenhouse as well as other pollutants. Some of the air pollutants include nitrogen dioxide, sulphur dioxide, carbon dioxide, heavy metals, and VOCs. The incomplete burnt compounds results in fine particles of soot that have been found to cause respiratory

Effects of Vegetation on Freshwater Shrimp

Effects of Vegetation on Freshwater Shrimp The aim of this experiment was to discover whether the presence of vegetation affected the abundance of the species of freshwater shrimp Gammarus pulex. To do this an experiment was carried out involving samples taken from a variety of vegetated and non-vegetated areas. The abundance of the species in each environment was measured and compared and found to be statistically significant. Freshwater shrimp do prefer vegetated areas over non-vegetated areas due to either; increased availability of detritus, increased oxygen content or additional protection from predators. Introduction: Gammarus pulex: (freshwater shrimp) are Crustaceans that are members of the Amphipoda order. Their bodies are curved into a C shape and they average approximately 20mm in length. As seen in figure 1, Gammarus pulex have 7 pairs of legs, two of which perform a grasping function similar to humans hands whilst the other 5 are adapted to swimming. The species gills are provided with oxygen by the vibrations of their legs and the 3 pairs of structures seen on the abdomen, the gills are located on the inside of the back five legs. Gammarus pulex have a high oxygen requirements and as a result are typically found in faster flowing, oxygen rich water. They are hatched from eggs and emerge fully developed and ready to reproduce. This results in a fast rate of reproduction. The offsprings sex is determined by the temperature of the water. These shrimps mate whilst the male carries the female on its back, this will occur several times per year. Gammarus pulex Have no natural defence mechanism o ther than their camouflage and as a result they are primarily active during low sunlight periods and under shelter. As a result of Gammarus pulexs lack of a defence mechanism they are typically found under and within the aquatic fauna and rocks within rivers. Gammarus pulex are primary consumers that typically consume detritus, i.e. they consume dead and decaying matter in order to provide energy for themselves. Gammarus pulex main predators are fish which that rely on them as one of their primary sources of food, fish commonly found to consume these shrimp include: Trout, Bullheads and Salmon. Rationale: Gammarus pulex can be used as an indicator species due to their affinity for highly oxygenated water. They (Gammarus Pulex) are intolerant of polluted waters or reduced dissolved oxygen concentrations, and can therefore be used as an indicator species for water quality. A decrease in the oxygen content of an ecosystem can have serious adverse effects on the other species within the ecosystem and is one of the most common causes of Fish Kills as a result it is a variable regularly monitored by fishing agencies Due to increasing awareness of the impact humans are having on their environment and the ecosystems that we interact with, biological indicator species will become increasingly important in the identification of suitable habitats for species to be introduced to. In addition to Gammarus pulex acting as an indicator species, they also require highly oxygenated water to survive and reproduce. A lack of oxygen within the water could potentially lead to anaerobic conditions within the water. Due the fact that they require oxygen for respiration (Aerobic) this would reduce the population of the shrimp within an area. This would have a knock on effect on the secondary and tertiary consumers within the food chain that also rely on Gammarus pulex as their primary food source such as trout and salmon. As a result, the abundance of the species is of key ecological importance within these ecosystems and steps should be taken to ensure high oxygen content of the water and adequate foliage and vegetation for the species to thrive within its niche. These goals can be achieved relatively easily through the planting of vegetation for cover. This would also provide raised oxygen levels due to the respiration of the plant life to produce oxygen as a by-product . In a study by H.H Costa on investigating the affect of low concentrations of oxygen on the number of reactions per minute in Gammarus pulex, strong correlations were made between the concentration of oxygen within the water and the number of reactions taking place per minute. Low levels of oxygen would lead to decreased metabolic activity, resulting in slower growth and reproduction. As a primary consumer this would have a detrimental effect on the rest of the ecosystem as a lower population of the species would result in food being a limiting factor for fish that relied on the species as a source of food. This could also lead to the gradual decline of other primary and secondary consumers as they are used as a source of energy by the tertiary consumers to sustain themselves. Aims: The aim of the experiment was to determine whether the presence of vegetation within the water at Nettlecombe church pool would have a significant impact on the abundance of Gammarus pulex measured within an area and whether any changes in abundance could be attributed to the independent variable (presence of vegetation) by controlling or measuring the other abiotic factors within the ecosystem. Null hypothesis: Statistically, there will be no significant correlation between the abundance of freshwater shrimp and the presence of vegetation within the stream. Alternate hypothesis: Statistically, there will be significant correlation between the abundance of freshwater shrimp and the presence of vegetation within the stream. Prediction Gammarus pulex will likely show a significantly higher presence in the vegetated areas of the stream due to several key biological factors: Defense: Due to the lack of any inherent defense mechanisms, the species relies on its camouflage as its sole mechanism for defense. Naturally, high amounts of vegetation present in an area provide an aid to the protection of the freshwater shrimp from its predators and allow a greater chance of the survival of the species. Oxygen content: The oxygen within water is derived primarily from submerged plants present within the water. As these plants photosynthesize, Oxygen is released as a byproduct and dissolves into the surrounding water. This increased oxygen content would attract freshwater shrimp to an area, as they are reliant on the surrounding water for the oxygen that is necessary for them to respire aerobically. Detritus: Organic material such as decaying plant material is the primary food source of Gammarus pulex as detritivores. If vegetation is present in an area an increased amount of detritus will also be present due to the death and decay of the submerged plants. This provides an ideal food source for the Gammurus pulex and increases the chances of survival and reproduction. As a result you would expect to see an increase in the abundance of the species in areas with vegetation. Independent variable The independent variable within the experiment was the presence of a significant (+10cm) amount of vegetation submerged within the water and the lack of +10cm of vegetation present. This was varied by locating two areas, one with +10cm of submerged vegetation and another without. Dependent variable The dependent variable within the experiment was the relative abundance of the species within the two separate areas per sample. This was measured through obtaining a sample and counting the number of Gammarus pulex present per sample. Control variables Several abiotic variables were controlled within the experiment to ensure that any changes in the abundance of the freshwater shrimps could be assigned to the changing in the independent variable. In the cases in which an extraneous variable could not be controlled without compromising the integrity of the experiment, the variable was measured and any anomalous readings recorded could possibly be assigned to that abiotic factor. PH: The acidity (concentration of hydrogen ions) within the water was measured by obtaining a sample in the two areas and measuring the sample through the addition of universal indicator. The PH of the water was measured as Gammarus pulex have an aversion to water with more extreme Phs. In Responses of Gammarus pulex to modified environment II. Reactions to abnormal Hydrogen ion concentrations H.H Costa states that at the PH values of 9.6. These negative reactions can be explained through the inability of the shrimps enzymes to function at these extreme PHs. Temperature: Temperature was measured in degrees centigrade through the use of a digital thermometer that was placed in each sample, allowed to stabilize and a reading was taken. Temperature was controlled due to the reaction of Gammarus pulexs offspring to temperature, at lower temperatures, offspring within eggs will hatch as male, whilst above this they will hatch as female. This would lead to one sex becoming dominant at extremely hot or cold temperatures, which would result in a reduced abundance as the difficulty of locating a mate increased. Light: The amount of light in each sample was recorded through the use of a lux meter as close to the water as possible. This variable was measured in lux and was measured as it is likely the shrimp will be more abundant in darker areas due to the increased effectiveness of their camouflage in these areas and increased protection this offers. Depth: The depth of each location was measured through the insertion of a ruler to measure the depth of each location. The ruler was placed on the surface of the sediment to stop it being pushed too far into the soft sediment and producing an inaccurate reading. Areas were chosen as close to 10cm deep as possible to rule out the depth of the water having any significant impact on the results produced. Pilot study: Introduction: Before carrying out the main study, a pilot study was used to determine the final procedure and method of the study. This pilot study was used to identify the best sampling technique to use to collect a sufficient number of shrimps per sample. This technique had to be efficient enough to collect enough data for a statistical significance to be shown and collect the maximum number of shrimp within an area to ensure that the true abundance of the species was actually being measured. In addition, the method used to collect the shrimp had to be standardized, so that the identical technique could be carried out in different areas to ensure the reliability of the technique. This meant the same technique could be carried out again to produce as similar results as possible. In addition, the best local spot to produce enough shrimp to state a significant difference had to be located. This pilot study was used to locate the areas that would be sampled in the main experiment by locating the areas with enough vegetation to have an impact on the dependent variable. This meant looking for areas with high levels of submerged vegetation within several different rivers until enough within as Single River was found. This was to make the control of extraneous variables easier as the variation in the variables would be far larger in separate bodies of water. Within the pilot study, I also had to assess the extraneous variables that would have to be measured in my final study to prevent them interfering with the data produced. During the pilot study, I identified that the amount of light in an area seemed to be having an effect on the abundance of the species within that area. This was potentially reducing the validity of the experiment. This was because any results produced were no longer necessarily down to just the independent (presence of vegetation) variable. As a result, I included the use of a light meter in the final experiment to control and limit the impact on the data produced. Along with deciding the variables to be measured, I also had to finalize the equipment used to measure the variable in a standardized manner. The pilot study was also used to identify any potential risks or hazards within the area. Once these were identified, appropriate controls could be taken to reduce or nullify the risks from these sources. Equipment list: A 15cmx10cm Scoop net A 1 meter long ruler A digital thermometer A square 1025 cm tray that was not filled with pond water A digital stopwatch Freshwater identification sheet Pipette Method: Whilst 3 rivers were found in close proximity, only one, the church stream, contained an appropriate number of vegetated areas to non-vegetated areas close enough to carry out the experiment expediently. In addition the proximity of the locations reduced any extraneous variables that were acting on the study. Thus the church stream was used for the final experiment. 2 methods of sampling with the net were carried out, the figure of eight sample (A)and the Kick sample'(B) A) This involved locating an area to sample and standing still whilst moving the net in a figure of eight through the water. This was timed for 10 seconds and 20 seconds .This method did not disturb the sediment of the area. B) The kick sample involved placing the net downstream of the area to be sampled and kicking up the sediment into the net without moving the net. This was timed for both 10 seconds and 20 seconds using the stopwatch. After collecting each sample the contents of the net was upturned and placed into the empty tray. The tray was then filled with water from the stream. Using the identification sheet, I timed for 1 minute on the stopwatch and counted all of the Gammarus pulex present in the tray within the time. Using a pipette to move them to a separate bucket once counted A variety of sampling techniques for the control variables were then carried out in the area. The ruler was used to measure depth at a variety of locations. This provided practice at accurately measuring the depth of the water without disturbing the sediment on the bed of the stream. The digital thermometer was then placed in the water, however not placed at the bed of the stream. Risk assessment: Before carrying out the pilot and main study, a risk assessment of the risks that could pose a threat to me or those in the surrounding areas was carried out. Through this I identified the hazard (negative effect 1-10) and the risk factor (chance of the hazard actually occurring 1-10) to control this I also decided on sensible controls to minimize the chance of the hazard occurring or minimize the severity of the hazard. The risk rating was calculated by multiplying the chance of the hazard occurring with the severity of the hazard (1-100). Hazard Severity of the Hazard Chance of occurring Risk rating Control Slipping and falling. 2 6 12 Ensure the muddy parts of the bank are noted and avoided. Wear appropriate footwear to avoid tripping/slipping. Drowning in unexpected deep water. 10 1 10 Ensure all personal can swim. Identify any deep areas before beginning. Contamination from any water/aquatic life. 8 3 24 Wash hands before and after touching the water. Do not handle the aquatic life, use a pipette instead Tripping with net/ruler. 4 4 16 Wear appropriate footwear, I.e. hiking boots Discussion of results: The number of shrimp produced by using method B for 20 seconds produced the largest total number of shrimp in both vegetated areas and non-vegetated areas. In comparison, method A produced the fewest number of shrimp in both vegetated areas and non-vegetated areas. The temperatures produced seemed to be pretty constant throughout the pilot study however the two 9.8 readings were likely caused by the thermometer not being pressed to the sediment properly, reducing the reliability of those readings. The preliminary findings reflected that more shrimp were indeed found in the vegetated areas in comparison to the non-vegetated. Evaluation of pilot study: Through the use of the pilot study I was able to identify the main problems with the study and remedy them for the final study: The measuring of the temperature using the thermometer was standardized by pressing the thermometer to the bed of the stream on each measurement. The sample I chose to use was the 20 seconds kick sample This method of sampling was far superior to the figure of eight sample. This was likely to the freshwater shrimp inhabiting the upper layer of the sediment; the kick sample dislodged them into the net whereas the figure of eight did not disrupt the sediment at all resulting in only the swimming shrimp being picked up. As a result, only the number of shrimp swimming in a sampled area was being measured not the total number of shrimp in the area. I chose to use the 20 second sample as, although it was less expedient than the 10 second sample, it did provide more species and reduced the chance of anomalies cropping up through not all of the shrimp being collected. Whilst measuring the depth in step 8, I noticed that the vegetated areas where normally darker than the non- vegetated areas. To counteract this variable, I decided to control it in the main experiment by measuring the light using a lux meter. This was to ensure that the results were down to the vegetation present. During step 1 and the selection of the location of the samples, I realized that I hadnt set any specification on what classed as enough vegetation to qualify as a vegetated area. After discussing this with my tutor I decided to use 10cm measurements of submerged vegetation qualify an area as vegetated. In addition, I used areas without any vegetation for the final experiment. Whilst collecting the samples in step 4 I realized that I was disturbing the ecology further downstream on further kick samples. This was an unfortunate side effect of using the kick sample from the top of the stream down. As a result, I decided to reverse the direction for the final experiment and take the values from downstream before taking those upstream. This stopped earlier experiments influencing later ones. Main Experiment: My final experiment took into account the findings from the pilot study and used these to modify the final experiment to produce the best results I could. The changes listed above were introduced to tailor the results of the experiment into a form I could use to compare the effect of the independent variable. Intro: My final experiment consisted of 10 samples of each vegetated and non-vegetated areas being taken, with the variables light, depth, temperature, PH and number of shrimp present being measured. The revised aim of the final experiment was to measure whether the presence of vegetation affected the abundance of Gammarus pulex present and whether this difference was statistically significant. To do this I carried out a stratified sampling technique to locate areas to work in, I,e areas with +10 cm of submerged vegetation. I then used a systematic sampling technique to collect the data as I timed how many of the species I could count from a sample in 1 minute. Equipment list: A 15cmx10cm Scoop net A 1 meter long ruler A digital thermometer A square 1025 cm tray that was pre-filled with pond water A digital stopwatch Freshwater identification sheet Pipette 1 Lux meter 1 bottle of universal indicator, with a beaker to collect a sample of water A small bucket to place counted shrimp in Writing equipment and paper to record results Pipette to collect the shrimp with Method: 10 vegetated areas were first located. This involved measuring the total submerged vegetation present and ensuring it was over 10cm long. The non-vegetated areas were then located, these were areas within as close proximity to the vegetated areas as possible but without any vegetation present. Starting from downstream and moving upstream, the kick sample was performed in the first vegetated area. This involved placing the net downstream from the sampling area and kicking the sediment for 20 seconds into the net. This was timed with the stopwatch. The sample in the net was upturned into the tray. The Gammarus pulex were identified using the species identification sheet and removed from the tray and placed in the bucket using a pipette. The total number of shrimp counted in 1 minute was recorded. The contents of the tray and bucket were emptied back into the water. The depth of the sampling area was then measured using the ruler and placing it on the stream bed. The lowest value of the water rising up the ruler was measured as the depth. The thermometer was then placed lightly on the stream bed, this was left to stabilize for 10 seconds and the value was recorded The lux meter was then placed as close to the water as possible and held still. After 10 seconds the value was taken. This method was repeated for the non-vegetated areas. This procedure was carried out at all of the 10 areas. Table of results for main experiment Calculations of the means for Vegetated data: Mean PH: (7.5 x 10)/10 = 7.5 Mean temperature C: (9.8 x 2 + 9.9 x 8)/10 = 9.88 Mean Lux reading (Lux) : (240+234+194+30+13+109+603+719+560+335)/10 = 303.7 Average depth (cm) : (10.0+9.5+5.0+4.0+4.0+5.0+5.2+8.2+12.8+13.2) /10 = 7.69 Mean Shrimp (Arbitary units) : 341/10 = 34.1 Calculations of the means for Non-Vegetated data : Mean PH: (7.5 x 10)/10 = 7.5 Mean temperature C: (9.8 x 1 + 9.9 x 9)/10 = 9.89 Mean Lux reading (Lux) : (846+645+300+71+24+123+441+739+506+389)/10 = 408.4 Average depth (cm) : (12+11.5+10.5+12+8+10.5+12.4+14.5+12.4+13.3) /10 = 11.71 Mean Shrimp (Arbitary units) : 56/10 = 5.6 Anomalies: Both of the values highlighted in red, are examples of possible anomalous data that could have been caused by procedural errors. 6 is far below the average shrimp reading of 34.1, this could have been caused by the high light reading on this particular reading, reducing the shrimps camouflage and therefore their safety in this area. The value of 17 was far ahead of the mean value of 5.6 and could have been caused through the procedural error of the pipette not sucking the shrimp up and them being counted twice. These samples also could have had the random error of large amounts of sediment resulting in some shrimps not being counted or others being counted twice. The clear variation in the number of Gammarus pulex sampled in the two areas would indicate that the vegetation did have an effect on the abundance of the population. Likely due to the increased defense offered by these areas and also how much easier it would be to obtain decomposing plant matter (Detritus) as a food source. The largest value for a vegetated shrimp was 79, with the lowest being 6. This is in comparison to the highest value for non-vegetated areas being 17, with the lowest being 2. The similarities between the abiotic factors, primarily temperature and P.H also increase the validity of the results produced. We can be sure that the results are actually as a result of the presence of the vegetation. It should be noted that none of the samples contained no freshwater shrimp, leading to the assumption that the water likely has a high oxygen content and has few pollutants. This is backed up by the location of Nettlecombe, a relatively rural area with few large roads runnin g nearby. Statistics: Within this study I decided to use the Mann Whitney U test to ascertain whether the difference between the two values was enough to reject the null hypothesis and convey a significant difference between the two sets of data. Null Hypothesis: There will be no significant statistical difference between the data drawn from vegetated samples and non-vegetated samples in the Nettlecombe church stream on the 14/10/12 The lowest U value calculated was 6, The critical value at 0.1 is 16 meaning that the Null Hypothesis can be rejected at the 0.1 significance level This allows us to accept the alternate hypothesis, and although there were small overlaps in the data, the difference between the two sets of data values is significant. Evaluation: Throughout the experiment, every effort was made to control or measure extraneous variables that could have an effect on the results of the experiment. As a result, the validity of the experiment is quite high; the values for all the abiotic variables were measured and have similar values for both the Vegetated areas and the non-vegetated areas. As a result we can make the assumption that any changes in the dependent variable, were in fact down to the independent variable. The pilot study was carried out to aid in the identification of any confounding variables, risks or extraneous variables that could potentially impact on the validity of the results produced and as a result of the pilot study, controls were put in place to counteract these variables. In addition, due to the standardized methodology carried out within both the pilot experiment and the final experiment, the method could be repeated under similar conditions to produce similar results. Resulting in a high reliability of the data. As the Mann Whitney U test allowed us to reject the null hypothesis at the 0.01% significance level, we must assume that the results produced show a significant change between the two environments. Although the results proved to be statistically significant, several procedural errors should be considered. Even with a 20 second kick sample, not all of the shrimp in a certain area could be collected as the shrimp likely inhabit different layers of the sediment. The speed at which the shrimp were counted at could also vary considerably based on the amount of sediment present in a sample, in a sample with high amounts of sediment, it would take longer to count and remove all of the shrimp within a minute than it would be in a clear sample. To counteract this, a stratified sample could be put in place; all of the shrimp from a sample could be counted rather than just counting for one minute. Systematic errors within parts of the equipment could result in repeatedly wrong measurements, e.g the Lux meter may not be calibrated properly and give readings that are continually 50 higher than they should be. Percentage error can also become a problem and whilst small, can be noticeable when accounted for in multiple datasets e.g. 0.01/500 x100 = 0.002 % percentage error There are also several ethical considerations to take into account when using live organisms within experiments. For instance the ecosystem is being massively disrupted through the use of a kick sample. All of the layers of sediment are being removed and many organisms are being collected in a sample that didnt have to be. A more specific and less environmentally invasive procedure could instead be carried out using the figure of eight sampling method so as not to disturb the stream bed ecosystem as much. Conclusion From the data and evidence provided above, a reliable argument can be put forward that the species Gammarus pulex does favor vegetated conditions over non-vegetated conditions. This could be down to a variety of reasons: Gammarus pulex is an aerobic organism and thus favors oxygenated conditions. During photosynthesis in submerged plants, oxygen is produced as a byproduct which diffuses into the surrounding environment (the water) this results in increased oxygen content. The oxygen content at this point is not acting as a limiting factor in the population of Gammarus pulux and thus an increase in the activity within the reproductive cycle of the species. This is demonstrated in the image to the right. Gammarus pulex favors the vegetated environment due to the increased source of detritus present through the decomposition of the plants present in the environment. This increased source of food and energy means the species expends more energy within its reproductive cycle and fewer of the species die due to starvation. Thus the population of the species in these conditions increases. Gammarus pulex could also potentially favor the vegetated environment due to the increased camouflage and protection it provides it. This could be part of a behavioral adaptation the organism has developed to protect itself from the fish that hunt it. This would result in large numbers gathering in the areas that they were safe and fewer of them being consumed by secondary and tertiary consumers resulting in larger numbers of them in the vegetated areas. Source evaluation Within my experiment, I extensively referenced and used H.H Costas work into the differing effects of modified environments on Gammarus pulex. This work was published in the scientific, peer reviewed journal Crustaceana. This journal is is a leading journal in the world on crustacean research. As a result I feel the peer reviewed work is both reliable and accurate and although published in 1967, the more recent research (Field guide to the water life of Britain 1984) also agrees with the core principles described in H.H Costas work. In addition to several peer reviewed journals, one of my sources was an Information pack produced by the University of Florida, a well respected academic institute unlikely to publish inaccurate or unreliable information. As well as the paper sources listed, I used a variety of websites to gather data on various aquatic processes and mechanisms. Whilst I trust the majority of the websites, certain websites such as source 2, dont back up many of the claims with any real evidence which could be a sign of unreliable or inaccurate information. Further research Further research could be carried out into the preferences of Gammarus pulex through an experiment designed to ascertain the type of vegetation that they prefer and also the nutritional value of the varying types of detritus to the organism. In addition, research could be done into pinpointing the exact reason that the species prefers to reside within vegetative conditions rather than non-vegetative.

Who do you think is more successful leader Ralph or Jack? :: Free Essay Writer

Who do you think is more successful leader Ralph or Jack? Ralph'sElected the leader of the boys at the beginning of the novel, Ralph is the primary representative of order, civilization, and productive leadership in the novel. While most of the other boys are concerned with playing, having fun, and avoiding work at the beginning of the novel, Ralph sets about building huts and thinking of ways to maximize their chances of being rescued. For this reason, Ralph's power and influence over the other boys are extremely secure at the beginning of the novel. However, as the book progresses and the group succumbs to savage instincts, Ralph's position declines precipitously as Jack's station rises. Eventually, all the boys leave Ralph's group for Jack's, and Ralph is left alone to be hunted by Jack's tribe. Ralph never seriously considers joining Jack's tribe in order to save himself. Ralph's commitment to civilization and morality is very strong, and his main wish is to be rescued and returned to the society of adults. In a sense, this strength gives Ralph a moral victory at the end of the nova, leadership qualities were to inspire confidence by providing hope for the rest of the group (we will get food hunt. Catch things until they fetch us), or example; the fire was used to signal and to attract only attentions he said (you rub two sticks. you rub), to any passing ships or planes. We see many events through Ralph's eyes, and are given many insights into the way he feels about events and people. Ralph was liked thus he was chosen as leader, he was fair, by him giving the group the right to speak whenever they are holding the conch. Blacks in the Criminal Justice System Essay

All I wanted to do was pop down to the all night chemist and get some medicine for my wife. Should have been a job that took ten minutes at the most but here I am sitting in my car a good thirty minutes later waiting for this young police officer to decide if he wants to prosecute me for something or not. Should have known better than to drive my mother-in-law’s car I suppose. I should have bought my own; but there you go. Her car was behind mine, she didn’t have a problem with me taking it, she gave me the keys for goodness sake. But no way should a young black male be driving a posh Mercedes around at night on his own. No I would have been ignored perhaps if I had been driving the old ford compact. But then no I would have still been picked up, after all it is gone ten pm and this is a â€Å"nice† area. No copper on this beat would understand that I was actually only about 200 yards from home. But that’s not how things are done around here, are they? No, this copper thinks I have stolen the car, you can just tell by the amount of time he is spending on that radio of his. Doesn’t matter that I have already given him my license and registration for the car; doesn’t matter that I have given him my home phone number so he can speak to my mother-in-law herself. Nope you can just tell from the way this guy is looking at me that he is planning to arrest me for something tonight, he is just having trouble working out what for. Oh well, I guess I am about to find out what he wants now, here he comes again. Oh yes officer of course I will get out of the car – do I mind being searched, what difference does it make if I do. Can he look in the car, well I am not going to stop him, I know what happens to young blacks who â€Å"resist† during a pull-over. Pop the trunk, yes, stand aside, well yes to that as well. I wonder how he is going to turn two bags of flour and some sugar into a criminal offence – â€Å"carrying an illegal substance† perhaps? After all sugar is supposed to be bad for you. Honestly this copper, doesn’t he realize that I know exactly what he is doing and why – doesn’t he know that I know that if my skin color was different that he would not have even pulled me over in the first place. After all I wasn’t speeding, I know there is nothing wrong with the car, there was no way I could be considered â€Å"acting in a suspicious manner†, my only crime – my face doesn’t fit that of a Mercedes owner. Funny thing is that I deal with cases just like this one everyday in my profession. Oh yes, I didn’t mention to the policeman that I am a lawyer. Didn’t want to aggravate him any more than necessary. I am an educated Black man, â€Å"made my moma proud† I did. Went to college and everything and yes I work full time. That is how I am able to afford to live in this posh neighborhood. That’s how come I can provide for my wife, our new baby and even my mother-in-law. I am a hard working, law abiding, family orientated young black man. But to this police officer I am just trouble with a capital â€Å"T†. Finally, what, I can go now officer? Oh thank you so much officer, I really appreciate it and yes sir I will go home directly. After all I have only been trying to do that for the last thirty minutes. My wife will be worried that I have been gone for so long, the mother-in-law will think I have crashed her new car. What is really ironic is that when we moved into this area we didn’t ever stop to consider that maybe the color of our skin would influence the way we would be treated. We just wanted somewhere safe for our children to grow up. I work, I pay my taxes and I try and help others. We go to Church regularly and want to teach our kids to be decent human beings. But how am I ever going to explain to my own kids that prejudice will follow you no matter where you go in life. In this country the American dream might be achievable for some people, but not if you are male, young and black. In this country being young and black means you look like a criminal, especially to white police officers. Part Two: White police officer pulling over African American male in late model Mercedes. It is just typical, you know. I had just stopped and bought myself a hot dog and some fresh coffee and wouldn’t you know it, I see a young black male cruising past driving a late model Mercedes if you can believe it. Those cars are worth what, $60 – $70,000, and I guess this guy just thought he was so lucky when he had â€Å"acquired† it. Okay you know and I know that this car is going to be stolen, but innocent until proven guilty and all that, it is my duty nonetheless to find out where this thug, I beg your pardon, young man is going in this posh car. Who knows maybe he runs an all night valet service and is just dropping off the car to its owner. Actually come to think about it I am fairly sure that I saw this car earlier this evening, that’s right, some older white woman was driving it. I think I saw it parked outside that posh looking place just around the corner. I know that some new people had just moved in there, well tonight is their lucky night. Caught a guy red-handed with the stolen car and it will only take a few minutes to let the owners know it has been recovered. Hey, I haven’t even heard a bulletin about the car being missing yet – well that’s the police force for you. Fast, efficient and ready to recover items you didn’t even know were missing. You can’t get any better service than that. The driver seems polite enough. Had to approach the car really slowly, because although I had only seen the driver, his mates could have been laying down in the back seat. Heard an officer was killed just last week when he pulled up what he thought was one person and there were three more thugs hidden from view. Can’t be too careful, especially when he went for his license and registration in the glove box. Gave me a bit of a fright when he leaned over to get the stuff, but there was no way I was going to let that show. No way, I am just going to take these documents back and sit in my car for a minute to let my nerves calm down. Let him think I am on my radio, checking him out really good. Well isn’t that strange? No criminal record, no warrants outstanding for this young thug. Address given doesn’t match the one on the license, but he claims he has just moved into the area. Claims too that the car is his mother-in-laws, like that is right. What woman with a surname like â€Å"Gladstone-Price† would have a son-in-law that was obviously a thug and Black as well, that guy must have thought I was an idiot. Dispatch reckons there will be a slight delay trying the phone number that the driver gave for the owner of the car, so while I am waiting I will just go and take another look at the car and driver – let this guy know who is in charge around here. Nothing like a good frisk and a car search to let these criminals know that police authority was not something to be mucked about with, especially in this neighborhood. What a strange night. Gave the guy and the car a good going over but didn’t find anything illegal. Then dispatch calls and tells me that the guy is in the clear and that the owner is a Mrs. Gladstone-Price, and that yes she had loaned her car to her son-in-law, Quincey Parks. What was even more astounding is that apparently this Parks is a lawyer and that he and his wife have just moved to that posh house around the corner. No telling what that will do to the local house prices. Still no need to apologize or anything, he’s a lawyer, he should know what to expect. I’m sure if I did a check on his family half of his brothers would be serving time and the other half probably should be. Time to head off and get another hot dog and some coffee. That guy Parks did mention something about police harassment, but hey he should be more understanding than anybody. If he doesn’t like drawing attention to himself he should never have bought his new house, and he should have stayed with his own people. That’s the problem with Blacks today – give them rights and all of a sudden they go moving into your neighborhood. Well if he thinks he is going to be asked to join the residents association he is in for a bit of a shock, we don’t welcome his kind around here.

E-commerce- Payment Methods On the Net essays

E-commerce- Payment Methods On the Net essays Almost 360million people worldwide use the internet regularly and one in four of these have made online purchases. Most of these transactions have been made using credit cards because they have had no other option. In this report I will attempt to identify and explain a series of e-payment methods which I could employ in the day to day running of my business. While doing this I will attempt to show the benefits they will bring to my businees and prospective customers alike while briefly including the key features of the payment systems I have identified. These cards store information on a chip contained within the card itself. These chips can store an incredibly diverse amount of information and the ability to store digital signatures and financial information is essential. The cards largely operate on the same principal as top-up phone cards where the chip is topped-up with a monetary amount which is then used for cash purchases. When this cash is spent, the chip is recharged with more money. The level of security and convenience with these cards is high as is the level of privacy and they are widely believed to be a genuine competitor of more widely used credit cards such as VISA and Mastercard. It is my belief that this method of payment would benefit both myself and my consumers for the following reasons: My business will enjoy lower costs due to high credit card network fees being reduced. The consumer also benefits from hidden costs being eliminated. A whole new market should open up to me due to my customers not requiring a credit card to make a purchase, especially in the lower priced goods market where credit card charges make it unprofitable for my business or more expensive for my customers. 2:Saferpay-Credit Card Payment Facilities Saferpay is an internet payment solution which would offer my business as well as consumer card holders a guarantee of secur ...

The last Days of Socrates by Plato

The last Days of Socrates by Plato Written by Plato, the book â€Å"The last days of Socrates† narrates the events following the trial of Socrates. It is a follow up of Plato’s ‘The Apology’ and provides a description of the conversations between Socrates, and his disciples, Crito and the jailer.Advertising We will write a custom critical writing sample on â€Å"The last Days of Socrates† by Plato specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More Plato, the author of the book, was one of Socrates’ best friends and students. Plato’s other works ‘The Apology’, ‘Euthyphro’, ‘Crito’ and ‘Phaedo’ depict the philosophical views of Socrates, especially before the trial, during the trial and after death. In this book, however, Plato concentrates on Socrates’ view of life and death, society and family. In addition, it provides the reader with information about the ancient Greek culture and beliefs. Hugh Tredennick and Harold Tarrant translated the book into English. Published by Penguin Books in England, the English version was released in 1993. In this book, Plato’s main character is Socrates. As Socrates waits for his death, he talks to his students such as Plato as well as Crito, an elderly man who had been Socrates’ friend throughout his philosophical career. The conversations reveal Socrates’ thinking about life and death. In addition, they reveal his thinking about the society, family and humanity. Arguably, Socrates believes in a better life after death, which he thinks is a solution to the social and family problems he undergoes during his life on earth. Socrates view of family and children is depicted in his conversation with Crito. The conversation is in an Agoran prison room, where Socrates is held before execution. He is waiting orders from the jailer, and several people, including Crito, have come to visit and bid him farewell. Despi te the normal philosophical conversation, there is a sad mood in the room because his friends cannot believe that their teacher is on his way towards death. Nevertheless, Socrates does not show signs of fear or remorse.Advertising Looking for critical writing on philosophy? Let's see if we can help you! However, Socrates tells them that they should not do anything to the family, but they should look after themselves instead. According to Socrates, this is the best way of honoring him after his death. It appears that Socrates values individuals than the family. He thinks that his wife and children have a life to live and should work to support themselves. The reader would expect Socrates to give Crito and other friends in the room some instructions on how to treat his family, c onsidering that he had two small sons and an older one. However, he tells his friends to â€Å"make professions† according to his teachings. Nevertheless, Socrates valued his family, as did other people in the Greek society. For example, his three sons, wife and other women from his larger family were brought to the prison cell to see him before his death. He appreciated them and gave them some instructions in the presence of Crito, but the author does not disclose the instructions. Nevertheless, it is clear that Socrates wanted them to live by themselves. In addition, he did not want his family to endure the pain of witnessing his death. Therefore, he dismisses all the members of his family, including his wife and three sons. He was aware that they would offend him by mourning his death. For instance, after taking the poison, Socrates becomes irritated by his followers because they started weeping. He asks them â€Å"what is the strange outcry?† (Tredennick and Tarran t 32). He tells them that he had dismissed his family, especially women, because they would offend him rather than let him die in peace. The social aspect of Greek life, as well as Socrates’ view of social life, is depicted in the book. For instance, Socrates believes that the social life in Greece is full of desperations and that there is no happiness. He believes that death is a sure way of getting a better life.Advertising We will write a custom critical writing sample on â€Å"The last Days of Socrates† by Plato specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More For instance, when Crito asks him how they should bury his body after death, he told them to treat the body in any way they would like. According to him, they will only be burying the body and not the soul. He tells Crito that his soul will leave the world and join the next world that has â€Å"the joys of the blessed† (Tredennick and Tarrant 26). This is an indication that he views life as full of sadness and not worth. Socrates also views social life as the poison to the soul. He believes that the soul is naturally pure, but falsehood infect it with evil. For instance, he tells Crito not to consider how they should treat the body, but concentrate on the belief that his soul will remain alive in the next world. He believes that Crito would be telling lies if he promised to treat Socrates’ body in a decent manner, yet he was aware that he was only dealing with the body and not the person himself. Perhaps one of the evils of social life that Socrates refers to is the cruelty of gaining wealth. While other people were busy accumulating wealth, Socrates had been busy teaching philosophy. In fact, the book depicts the possibility that he died before clearing his debts. For instance, when the impact of the poison was almost reaching his heart, he realized that he was about to die. Therefore, he requests Crito to pay a cock to Asclepius. Evident ly, this is one example of the debts Socrates left behind. Therefore, it is quite evident that Socrates view of life was negative as indicated in the book. It reflects his view of family and social life and the belief in a better life after death.Advertising Looking for critical writing on philosophy? Let's see if we can help you! Case Study - Essay Example Today, the Company could be converted into a Public Limited Company where the public is allowed to invest in as a way of raising finances and also creating ownership. The Carrier Engineering Companys strength lied in the fact that it was a unique product penetrating the market. Beverage companies, Medical laboratories, households all use this product to regulate the temperature of their products or goods. Some products can only be used during hot seasons, and that is a major weakness. The product is in high demand during hot seasons thus providing an excellent opportunity. Another opportunity exists with companies that use coolers to manufacture or preserve their products. Fluctuation in weather poses as a major threat especially the cold season. The other threat back then was financial stability and clientele. With the current weather, the product is still much relevant in ensuring a "well-regulated environment"(Carrier, 2015). The cooler is also widely used by companies across the continent to enhance their products life. A cooler is also utilized in the manufacture of most of the products that we have in the market today such as laptops, and refrigerators. It is important to define your product. For Willis and the Carrier Company, a quality product is essential to getting referrals. It is also important to work with other companies that use coolers in the manufacturing process of their products. A room for clients comment and feedback concerning the product is also important and consideration of the same. Willis carrier would need to make use of the balance sheet and the income statement of his company and that of his subsidiaries. Plato Short Paper Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words

Plato Short Paper - Essay Example ‘The Republic’ which is an influential philosophical book was written by Plato in which he spoke many of his ideas on the nature of knowledge and reality. The theory of forms unravels the fact on how do we evolve the knowledge. According to Plato, our knowledge is mere recollection of the forms that we have seen prior to our birth and the knowledge on the immaterial realities cannot be obtained through our bodily experiences. The pertinent aspects of theory of forms are briefed in the ensuing part of this paper. Forms are the ideas which are not the material world of change and the things that we experience through our senses are particular things not abstract things. For instance, we see a flower and we understand that it is beautiful. This beauty is referred to a particular flower but we do not see ‘beauty’. We understand that there are many beautiful flowers. In the view of Plato, if there are many beautiful flowers there will be a common factor that is shared by all the beautiful flowers. Therefore, there must be a thing known as ‘beauty’ which is not visible and experiential to our senses. So, there is a universal idea of beauty that is shared by all the beautiful things and this is the core idea of the form. Plato postulates the theory of metaphysics of forms describing that form has existence independently on the particular things. For example, beauty exists independently on the beautiful things but beautiful things share the beauty in common. There are some essential properties for the forms in the view of Plato. They are self predication, independence from particulars, perfection, permanence and simplicity. Self-predication means that form is simply beautiful independent of particular things, but particular things are beautiful since they share the universal beauty. Independence from particulars means that the form has its own essence, and therefore, the form does not need time and space for its

Definition of Good and Evil Essay Example for Free

Definition of Good and Evil Essay The nature of good and evil one of humanities never ending conflicts since the beginning of time. For instance in the novella Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad explores the issues surrounding imperialism, and centers Marlow the main character. The conflict between good and evil is particularly evident throughout the story. In following the novella you begin analyzing and thinking theories for instance: people are inherently evil and its expressed in varieties of forms, or people are inherently good, but become corrupted by society and other outside forces. In my perspective Im in position of people are inherently good, but become corrupted by society and other outside forces I do believe theyre people who are inherently good but influenced negatively by society and endure on evil. I stand on this position because in Heart of Darkness Marlow expresses The word ? ivory rang in the air, was whispered, was sighed. You would think they were praying to it. A taint of imbecile rapacity blew through it all, like a whiff from some corpse. By Jove! Ive never seen anything so unreal in my life. And outside, the silent wilderness surrounding this cleared speck on the earth struck me as something great and invincible, like evil or truth, waiting patiently for the passing away of this fantastic invasion. (Conrad 368) This quote Marlow clarifies that hes in this situation because of the white mans pursuit for ivory which caused death and greed; in which it proves the point of good people influenced by evil forces. Another example of this is in Part III in Heart of Darkness when Marlow and Kurtz finally meet each other through the steamships departure from the Inner Station. Here Marlow describes his developing relationship with Kurtz in terms of intimacy and betrayal. Marlow also indicates that the Africa natives are responsible for Kurtzs current condition of evilness and cruelty. Finally in the end after Kurtz dies his last words were the horror, the horror I believe Kurtz is referring to the darkness in his heart or emptiness, also being a failure of his destiny. Chinua Achebe feels differently about the novella Heart of Darkness mainly because its concept of evil. She expresses that The Heart of Darkness projects the image of Africa as the other world, the antithesis of Europe and therefore of civilization, a place where a mans vaunted intelligence and refinement are finally mocked by triumphant bestiality in other words evil. Achebe also disliked the fact how the African natives were perceived as ignorant and simply just faded into the background. Achebe concluded by stating realized that no easy optimism was possible. And there is something totally wrong in offering bribes to the West in return for its good opinion of Africa. In conclusion Africa was where colonist evil dwelled in Heart of Darkness. Evil in which takes the form of imperialism, hypocrisy, ambiguity, and moral confusion. In which case proves my theory people are inherently good, but become corrupted by society and other outside forces. You can fallow Marlow in the novella in how he is forced to align himself with either the hypocritical and malicious colonial bureaucracy or the malevolent Kurtz. This will assure the reasons why the nature of good and evil is one of humanities never ending conflicts.
